The following account is written by Becky Vasquez Perez

Knowing that my parents were growing older and that their memory would be failing, I asked my mom to give me a little historical background on how she met our Dad. Following is her account:

1984 Dictation of Esther Vasquez

“We met in McAllen, Texas in 1924, as neighbors. I was fourteen years and he was eighteen. We became steady friends by writing letters to each other. On my fifteenth birthday, he gave me a manicure set and an engagement ring. I gave him my photograph and he gave me his. I hid it because my parents did not permit photographs of boyfriends in the house.

He started attending a Baptist Church which I also attended. During that year, he was baptized. We never dated. We only saw each other at church. When I was sixteen years old, he sent a delegation to ask for my hand in marriage. Both sets of parents took one month to reply. We were married on January 23, 1927.

After three years of marriage, the Lord blessed us with our firstborn—the first of seven sons and six daughters.

In 1979, two years after our 50th wedding anniversary, my husband became ill. I took care of him at home for five years. At present, my husband is a patient at Bethany Convalescent Hospital in San Jose. I am happy because he is well taken care of and the personnel is friendly.

We have been blessed with 37 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. My daily prayer is that God will give much love and patience to everyone employed at Bethany.”
